Great Band -- The Primate Fiasco

I ran across a great act this summer -- The Primate Fiasco. This raging band hails from New England, I met them at Floydfest in Virginia  after their canopy crapped out in the wind and they needed some place to store their instruments (which include a Sousaphone) and they used a spare canopy at Dancin Dave's Festival Camping camp. They absolutely killed it during every show they did at the fest, which included some crowd-thrilling funkalicious pop-ups.

Give these fine folks a listen, and help me lobby to get them to Bear Creek Music and Art Festival next year!

For those of you in a family way, The Primate Fiasco also has a fantastic record with some fine rowdy kid's songs. Check out their version of "Wheels on the Bus!"

Sweet fests this weekend in Georgia, North Carolina

This weekend (Sept. 14-16), there are two worthy fests -- one in Northern Georgia with a jazzy-rootsy vibe, and one in North Carolina with some big funk and Americana headliners Here's what you need to know....

The Jomeokee Festival happens in Pinnacle, North Carolina, with Del McCoury Band , Stephen Marley, Yonder Mountain String Band , Keller Williams, Travelin’ McCourys, Jimmy Herring Band, Lettuce, The Everyone Orchestra , Michael Kang, Al Schnier, Vinnie Amico, Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe, Jennifer Hartswick, George Porter Jr., Emmitt-Nershi Band, Patterson Hood and Downtown Rumblers, Midnite, Floodwood, Larry Keel, The Broadcast, Invisible III, Twin Cats, The DanBerrys, Captain Midnight Band, Melvin Seals.

Weekend tickets are $145, and day tickets are $100 plus fees. Tickets include primitive tent camping. A limited number of car camping, primitive RV, and RV with power passes are available for an additional charge. There's family camping and kid's activities.

The promoters say the music "takes place in a natural amphitheater at the Jomeokee Campgrounds in Pinnacle, NC. The stunning view of Pilot Mountain creates a picturesque background for two side-by-side stages showcasing alternating sets.Del McCoury curates one stage featuring top notch bluegrass, string and Americana music. The second stage shifts the focus to funk, jam and world music with mind blowing collaborations you have to see to believe. Beyond the tree line is a workshop stage for an intimate experience with world-class musicians. Night owls can expect all-star collaborations with picking and singing around the campfire."

Lafayette, Georgia is home to TDawg's Back Porch Hootenanny, an intimate gathering of musicians and fans on a private farm. a weekend pass includes camping and it is only $50.

This recurring fest is run by Georgia promoter Thomas Helland. festgrrl has not yet made it up to this venue, so I'll let TDawg tell you what's up:

"Cherokee Farms is a very relaxing and embracing property, and when you combine that feeling with the friends, family & music around you, it's hard to go wrong! ;-) The Hootenanny audience is truly one of the most appreciative and enjoyable I've been around, and it's been fun to see this great event continue to grow. The lineup this time around represents a wicked good jazz vibe infused with fresh southern grooves, insane North Carolina pickin', Cajun, bluegrass, and Americana soaked southern music w/ a touch of vaudeville

Emmitt-Nershi Band headlines Alabama bluegrass shindig

Wild mushroom rock at Horse Pens 40
Now, this little out-of-the-way fest looks really great. The gorgeous -- but oddly named - Horse Pens 40 park in northern Alabama hosts the Red Clay Revival camping bluegrass and art festival Sept. 7-9. (The park got its name for the tall rock formations which made a handy horse corral in the olden days. )

Headliners are the Emmitt-Nershi Band (Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon and Bill Nershi of String Cheese Incident), Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth, Alabama music collective Red Clay Revival, Colonel Bruce Hampton, and Donna Hopkins. You know it's gonna be good. You can see the daily schedule here.

Also playing:

* Rollin' in the Hay
* Earthbound
* Antioquia
* Rorey Carroll Band
* Dorian Green
* Festival Expressions
* Joe Mack
* Sarah Shaffer
* River Dan
* Sp accoustic

The price is right at just $55 for a 3-day ticket. VIP is $115, and you get free beer and lunch and dinner on  Saturday and Sunday with that.  Emmitt- Nershi plays Sunday night, and there are Sunday-only day tickets also available for $25.

This place is so cool!
The venue is family-friendly, and has bath houses. No campfires, no glass. Also, you can't car camp, but you can drive in to unload your stuff at your campsite, then park in the parking area.

I hear the after-hours picking is sublime up in that rocky paradise. The show is a fundraiser for  Space One Eleven, a visual arts nonprofit in Birmingham.

Deluna Fest Coming Soon to Pensacola

Florence
Pearl Jam, Florence and the Machine, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Cliff, Joan Jett,  the Zac Brown Band, Ben Folds Five, Dumpstaphunk and many others converge next month on the sugar-white sands of Pensacola Beach for Deluna Fest, which happens Sept. 21-23.

This festival started in 2010, and it's an eclectic mix of big-name rockers, New Orleans power bands and Southeastern tour stalwarts. It's not a camping festival, so you'll have to find lodging or get a spot in one of the state parks or private campgrounds.

Three-day tickets cost $234 (that includes taxes and fees) and single day tickets are $75.

The weird aspect of this fest is no one is allowed to bring any chairs.You can't bring an umbrella either.Or a camera with a "detachable lens." You can't swim in the ocean at the concert site, even though you're standing right there on the beach. Like I said, weird.

Donna The Buffalo at Suwannee This Weekend!

Festgrrl will be indulging in one of her very favorite things this weekend -- dancing with friends to The Funky Side, by Donna the Buffalo. The New York state roots rockers are playing the Suwannee Valley Flood Jam at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park Saturday in the moss-draped natural ampitheater. They hit the stage at 7:30 pm, after Peter Rowan, and they'll host a jam later in the evening.

The two-day fest is a benefit for the many folks who lost their homes and belongings in June when Tropical Storm Debby dropped a whole lot of water on Live Oak and the surrounding area. Tickets are $45 advanced, $60 at the gate.

Peter Rowan at the Suwanee Valley Flood Jam

How wonderful that bluegrass lion Peter Rowan is coming down here to steamy North Florida to play the benefit Suwannee Valley Flood Jam  this weekend (Aug. 17 & 18. ) The fest -- only $45 for advance tickets -- will raise money for the many who lost their homes and belongings during Tropical Storm Debby.

Here is a great, longish jam featuring Rowan with Jeff Mosier. He really starts to rage after Panama Red:
