Blackwater Bound

Heading out today for the Blackwater Music Festival at Spirit of the Suwannee in Live Oak, Fl. One of the performers festgrrl is most happy to see is Florida's own JJ Grey and Mofro -- who dropped their fifth CD, Georgia Warhorse, on August 24.

Mofro has had their own Blackwatrer Sol Review the last two summers in St. Augustine. So pleased to have them at Suwannee, and for two sets -- one a JJ solo set Friday from 4:30 to 6 p.m and  one with the whole band 8-9:30 on Saturday.

Many of you have complained it's too hot to fest now in North Florida. Come on,y'all, there's a cold river, a cold pool, and a shaded stage at Spirit of the Suwannee. Bring your bathing suit, your fan,  and your cold beer and come on witchyo bad self! Support these fantasitc performers coming all the way here to rage with us! See you there.

Here is a very positive review of the new Mofro CD from Iowa of all places...

The Daily Iowan
CD Review: JJ Grey and Mofro

BY JASON M. LARSON
AUGUST 24, 2010 7:20 AM

There are few albums these days that just make me want to listen to it over and over again. The fifth release from JJ Grey and Mofro, Georgia Warhorse, does exactly that and more.

In addition to the quality of guests Toots Hibbert and Derek Trucks, the music and narrative lyrics have an incredibly powerful presence. The group's previous releases, which include Orange Blossoms, Country Ghetto, Loochloosa, and Blackwater, all had this same Southern-blues feel but not to this degree.

Some of the sound comes from where the album was recorded.

That place is Retrophonics Studio in St. Augustine, Fla. The equipment used is described as vintage, which fits the style of the music and of Grey himself. The studio is owned by Jim DeVito, a large man whose MySpace profile picture looks like that of a biker-gang lord.

The album, released on Chicago blues label Alligator Records, starts out with a funky tune called "Diyo Dayo." With a wailing harmonica and backup vocals, it gets the head bobbing and feet tapping.

Listeners get a sense of being in a smoky Florida bar with the music pumping loudly, drinks pouring, and gators outside trashing around in the water with prey in their mouths.

It moves on to a slower seven-minute long ballad called "King Hummingbird" that makes you want to grab your girl and slow dance. Its acoustic guitar displays real soul mirrored not only in the lyrics but also in Grey's singing.

The song "The Sweetest Thing" features the soulful voice of Hibbert, who was also on local reggae group Public Property's latest album, Work to Do. Hibbert is one of Grey's biggest heroes and influences.

As the album progresses, more of JJ Grey & Mofro's talent comes out. The lyrics themselves are written like narratives that display Grey's ability as a storyteller. The music flows in and out of upbeat and slower tunes that are fit for a swamp king. Guitarist Trucks helps close it with the song "Lullaby," a slow psychedelic-blues song that builds up and up until it comes to a slow and steady stop. Truck's signature slide guitar is so apparent that it creates an epic ending to a great album.

Iowa's jazz station, 88.3 FM KCCK, recently had the album as its Saturday night "Midnight CD," a program that showcases a new album in its entirety. The program aired directly after "Da-Blues with Bob DeForest," an Iowa Blues Hall of Famer.

JJ Grey & Mofro's great cult status is now in danger after the release of the group's latest album. Georgia Warhorse raises the bar so high, the rest of the world may just start to notice this slowly rising star. Over the past decade, the group has been increasing its fan base show by show.

Some locals may remember when the group played in Iowa City at the Yacht Club in July 2008. Owner Scott Kading does, and he has told The Daily Iowan the group is his favorite band. He discovered JJ Grey & Mofro while on the Internet and stayed online for hours listening to its music. Kading loved it so much he wanted the group the play at his club.

"It took over five years to book one of the coolest shows ever," he said. "Love the swamp funk."

Mofro's Jacksonville Homecoming

It's a rare and dear thing to watch a big break-out act come back to play its hometown. I imagine The Avett Brothers Asheville, North Carolina New Year's show this year was a special one.

North Florida native JJ Grey and his band Mofro played Freebird Live in Jacksonville for a 3-night run on New Years Eve, Jan. 1 and Jan. 2. I caught the Jan. 2 show and it was special, indeed. What can you say about a crowd which sings the lyrics to "Lochloosa" so loud that JJ Grey just stops and directs it all with a huge grin? This song is a sad tale of the development-bombed landscape that our state has become, and JJ sings his wrenching lament with heart. I got goosebumps when the crowd bellowed with raised fists: "All we need is one more developer tearing our heart out!" "All we need is another shopping mall, another golf course, another gated community!"

Mofro was absolutely smoking, with hot horns, a killer drummer and JJ's bad-ass guitar, harmonica playing, and soul-drenched vocals. JJ wails like the soul great that he is, on a par with the Otis Reddings and Wilson Picketts of the world.

JJ Grey and Mofro are off on Jamcruise. When they hit land, they will play two more Florida dates with New Orleans funk powerhouse Galactic: Jan. 8 at Orlando's House of Blues, and Jan. 9 at Fort Lauderdale's Revolution. Catch 'em if you can, you won't be disappointed.

One more fest on the spring lineup

Memorial Day Weekend May 22 and 23, Acoustic Cafe. This is a very small fest in northern Alabama, with some newgrass and bluegrass greats, including the great Dread Clampitt. We all basically camp in Steve, the promoter's, yard. It's a steep mountainside and he has ample acreage. He says: "the largest gathering of earthy tie-died people in Alabama. The music is what brings people to the mountain; the sense of village that we have created is what keeps people coming back. Among this colorful crowd of VW buses and dread locks is a real feeling of love. The children are polite, camp sites are clean, & we even sort the recyclables out of our trash. I continue to invite this crowd to my home because they know how to act and they leave the place as pretty as they find it. I dare say there is not a better crowd anywhere."

One band plays on stage at a time, which I love because everyone experiences the sme thing at the same time, and I don't have to make any decisions! Oh so relaxing. This is a very kid-friendly event. Very sweet spot, lots of cool rock ledges. You can only have tents up there, RVs have to park down the mountain. Steve makes an exception for VW busses.

We heard Dread Clampitt acoustic in Steve's natural ampitheatre, where the rocks seem to convey the music. The music was intricate and soulful, and the audience was silently awed. I will never forget it, one of the absolute highlights of my life as a music lover.

Steve has porta potties, a hose to wash down with, one food vendor, and free coffee - !! - on his porch. Best to come fully prepared with all your supplies and your smile. We met some of the most wonderful folks there last year and Steve himself is a gem and so generous to offer up his land for music magic.

Get your Bear Creek tickets now

I am so psyched for the Bear Creek festival at the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. The ticket prices go up a few bucks on September 17, so get on it, festivarians!

I went to Bear Creek last year and it was completely chill, uncrowded, and, of course, featured stellar bands. Bear Creek is the reincarnation of the old Down on the Farm festival which was held in Quincy, Fla. for a couple of years. The Down on the Farm people bought new land for their festival site, but locals nixed the fest. That's when they moved it the Suwannee Music park.

That's cool by me. Suwannee is a fabulous venue with great camping and an awesome river beach. The main river beach is a long way from the stages, so you'll need a car or golf cart to get there. You can walk to a different, closer spot to swim, but there's no beach there. With the river as high as it is, beach will be hard to find in any case. Still, you must baptize yourself in the Suwannee!

For Bear Creek, JJ Grey and Mofro is the band I am most excited to see. They get better every time I see them. I caught them at Echo Project in Georgia, and at their own Blackwater Sol Review in St. Augustine, Fl. summer of 2007. They also put on a killer show at 2007's Wannee festival, also held at Suwannee Music Park.

I have no idea why JJ Grey isn't more famous, He's got the star quality, the pipes, the writing chops and the showmanship to be bigger nationally.

I'll be back soon to preview Magnolia Fest, which is coming up fast. Yay! Can't wait to see all my festy friends!
